Intruder alarm monitoring involves remote communication from the Alarm System to advise on any activations or unregulated activity. It can be self-managed or connected to a professional monitoring service. 

Types of Intruder Alarms 

There are several different types of Intruder Alarm System on the market, and these can be defined into 4 types. 

  • Wired Alarms: A wired system is basically what it says. All motion detectors, bells, devices door contacts, and keypads are wired back to the main control panel and are connected through physical wires. These types of systems are typically more reliable but harder to install. 
  • Wireless Alarms: Fundamentally they are the same as their wired counterpart except the detectors are wireless and report back to the main control panel via radio. They tend to be easier to install but may be susceptible to interference. 
  • Hybrid: these use a mixture of both wired and wireless devices and are very popular with Alarm upgrades particularly in residential properties. 
  • Smart Alarms: The newest solution on the market, smart alarms allow you to conveniently arm and disarm your alarm system from anywhere via a smart device. They can integrate with home automation systems and can be monitored via smartphones.

    How Monitored Security Alarms Work 

    The Main Control Panel of the Alarm System will have a compatible communications device. In the event of an activation or unexpected activity, the communication device will send information as pre-agreed with the client.  

    The following is an example of some of the information that can be sent; 

    Other signaling options include Fire, Temperature change, Water detection, CO2, Low Battery Alarm, Hostage and Lockdown.  It is also possible to create bespoke signaling for a site-specific requirement.

    Police Response Protocols 

    Often requested by Insurers, Police attendance is only available for systems connected to the ARC. In most cases, a dual channel communications device will be required. Dual channels means that, if onbe channel fails, there is a secondary channel as back up. With the removal of the copper cabling network by BT in the UK, the common options for Dual Channel signaling are either LAN/GSM or GSM/GSM. 

    The Police normally require verification of the alarm activation to remove unnecessary police attendance calls. Options of verification include;

    Typically, an intruder alarm system should have a comprehensive maintenance visit every year. If you have your intruder alarm monitored, this increases to twice a year. However, one of these maintenance visits may be done remotely.
