Monitored Alarm Options
The Ability to Provide different Levels of Security
Alarm monitoring options include self/DIY monitoring, professional monitoring, and access control systems:
- Self-Monitoring: Alerts are sent directly to the property owner via messaging to an APP on a smartphone or via an SMS text. This works if the homeowner can respond quickly or has Neighbours/friends/family also in close proximity to the property.
- Professional Monitoring: These can be connected to a designated Insurance approved Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). 24/7 permanently staffed Control Rooms will on receipt of signaling, action as per a client’s instructions, for example they can call a Keyholding Company or the local Police Force.
- Integrated Systems. Primarily for commercial or large residential premises, where there is a dedicated Security team. Alarms can work together with CCTV & Access Control installations to provide the client with an all-encompassing integrated solution.
How Monitored Security Alarms Work
The Main Control Panel of the Alarm System will have a compatible communications device. In the event of an activation or unexpected activity, the communication device will send information as pre-agreed with the client.
The following is an example of some of the information that can be sent;
- Open/Close: advising of the times that the Alarm system has been set/unset.
- Panic Alarm: this occurs if a Panic button or hold-up device has been activated.
- Intruder Activation: signals an Intruder device has been triggered while alarm is set.
- Mains Power Failure: alarm is still set but is now running on batteries due to mains power failure.
- Tamper Fault: if system is unset, and equipment is tampered with.
Other signaling options include Fire, Temperature change, Water detection, CO2, Low Battery Alarm, Hostage and Lockdown. It is also possible to create bespoke signaling for a site-specific requirement.
Monitored security alarms provide a powerful sense of peace of mind allowing the customer to go about their normal day, knowing their home/office is being continually monitored.
Police Response Protocols
Often requested by Insurers, Police attendance is only available for systems connected to the ARC. In most cases, a dual channel communications device will be required. Dual channels means that, if onbe channel fails, there is a secondary channel as back up. With the removal of the copper cabling network by BT in the UK, the common options for Dual Channel signaling are either LAN/GSM or GSM/GSM.
The Police normally require verification of the alarm activation to remove unnecessary police attendance calls. Options of verification include;
- Sequential verification: Where two different Detection devices are triggered in a short space of time.
- Video Verification: the use of CCTV to investigate Alarm activations in more depth.
- Audio Verification; Contacting the client direct, for a password-controlled conversation.
Maintenance and Testing
Typically, an intruder alarm system should have a comprehensive maintenance visit every year. If you have your intruder alarm monitored, this increases to twice a year. However, one of these maintenance visits may be done remotely.
To maximize protection, you must ensure that your security alarm is in good working. The following steps will allow to you be sure that your alarm is in full working order:-
- Regular Testing: Test alarms monthly to ensure functionality.
- Routine Maintenance: Schedule professional inspections to check for hardware malfunctions and battery life.
- Software Updates: For smart systems, keep firmware updated for optimal security.
Best Practices
To ensure that you get the most out of having a monitored alarm system there are some fundamental things that should be proactively implemented so that all parties know the response plan if ever needed including: –
- Training: Ensure all users are trained on the alarm system and response protocols.
- Emergency Plans: Develop clear procedures for various scenarios, including false alarms and actual intrusions.
- Communication: Maintain clear lines of communication with the monitoring service and keyholders.
Whether self-monitored or professionally managed, effective monitoring enhances response times and overall safety. Regular maintenance and choosing the right monitoring service are key to maximizing effectiveness.
