When it comes to automatic gates, safety is just as important as security. That’s where gate safety edges come in. These vital components are designed to prevent accidents and injuries, giving you peace of mind while your gate operates reliably and smoothly.

At SCS, we only use quality products we trust — and when it comes to safety edges, our preferred supplier is ASO Safety Solutions, known across the industry for reliable, responsive, and innovative edge technology.

What exactly is a Gate Safety Edge?

A gate safety edge is a pressure-sensitive strip that is mounted on moving parts of a gate. It works as a switch — when the edge is pressed or encounters an obstacle, it instantly sends a signal to the gate’s control panel to stop or reverse the movement.

Inside the edge is a rubber profile with internal conductive elements. When pressure is applied (e.g., a person, vehicle, or object is in the way), the conductive paths touch and close an electrical circuit — this triggers an immediate stop to prevent damage or injury.

This type of technology is essential for compliance with safety regulations, particularly in commercial and public settings where pedestrian and vehicle traffic is high.

    Where Are Safety Edges Installed?

The installation of safety edges depends on the type of gate — swing or sliding — and the potential risk zones. Here’s a quick overview:

    Swing Gates

    – Hinge side (closing edge): Where the gate meets a fixed post or wall.
    – Leading edge (opening edge): The front edge of the gate that moves outward or inward.
    – Bottom edges: Especially useful if the gate passes over uneven ground or a slope.
    – Secondary leaves: On bi-leaf gates, both gate panels may require safety edges depending on direction of travel and installation environment.

    Sliding Gates

    – Leading edge: The moving front edge that slides across the entrance.
    – Trailing edge: To prevent contact when the gate reverses.
    – Post or pillar edges: Where the gate may compress an object against a fixed structure.
    – Lower edge near ground: Useful if the gate slides close to the ground where feet or small objects may be in danger.

Why We Choose ASO Safety Edges

ASO is a leader in gate and door safety technology, and their safety edges are known for:

    – Quick and reliable response times
    – Weather resistance for year-round outdoor use

    Safety Isn’t Optional

Whether you’re installing a new gate or upgrading an existing one, safety edges are not just optional extras — they’re essential safety features. At SCS, we ensure every installation meets the highest safety and compliance standards, protecting you, your family, your staff, and the public.

Gate Safety – Would Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Last week the Door and Hardware Federation issued a warning following an incident at a school in Surrey involving a five-year-old boy. They have urged caution regarding reducing gaps at hinges as it was revealed that the boy’s hand slipped and went into the reducing hinge gap of a door set where no guards were […]
